Fixed UHF yagis for SatNOGS ground station

For my SatNOGS ground station I have tried several omnidirectional antennas for UHF without success – Dipole, V-Dipole, Eggbeater and Turnstile. I know that several SatNOGS station are using omni antennas for UHF with very good result – but at my QTH it seems not possible. I have high hills surrounding and a high level of local interference on 435 MHz.

So, my solution is fixed yagis. I’m using a lower budget yagi from Vinnant antennas – Y8E446 8 element yagi but tuned for 435 MHz.

This antenna is excellent for it´s price – very good SWR and good quality. At first I used only one antenna and now I could decode satellites when it was passing in front of the antenna loob.

To be able to decode more passes I added one more yagi and stacked the antennas with a short 75 ohm power divider coax cable. I used the instructions from this webpage.

After testing directions at several positions I’m now using an elevation of about 30 degree and azimut of aprox 120 and 240 degree. Of course the signal level is lower than just using one yagi but I can now decode satellites in bort west and east pass.

Summary:
For my station this is a solution that makes it possible to receive at least the strongest UHF satellites. To receive better I should probably need a antenna rotor.

ITASAT-1 telemetry 2020-12-04

Strong telemetry at 145.858 MHz easy to decode. Used the following:

  • RX at aprox 145.858 MHz USB BW 3.2 kHz
  • 2 * 6 el Yagi circular polarization (Vårgårda)
  • AlfaSpid RAS az/el rotor
  • LNA Mini-2 from SHF Elektronik
  • LMR-400 coax
  • SDR Airspy Mini
  • SDR-Console v3 with doppler correction of downlink and satellite tracking, rotor control
  • PstRotator for rotor control interface between SDR-Console and RAS controller
  • VB-Cable: virtual audio cable for piping audio from SDR Console to Soundmodem. Set to 96 kHz and 16 bit.
  • Soundmodem v 1.05 at mode BPSK AX.25 1200bd (1k2). Be sure that the BPSK signal is centered “over” the signal in the spectrum. See image.
  • Telemetry reader and forwarder from DK3WN, in order to see and forward telemetry to SatNOGS. Note that this is a beta version.

RadFxSat-2 / Fox-1E uppskjutning 19 december 2020

Den sista satelliten i AMSAT-NAs FOX-serie, RadFxSat-2 / Fox-1E, har fått ett uppskjutningsfönster som börjar den 19 december (2020). Till skillnad mot de andra FOX-satelliterna, som har haft FM-transponder, har Fox-1E en linjär inverterande transponder för SSB och CW-trafik.

Dessutom har telemetrilänken flyttat till 70cm på 435.750 MHz och kan tas emot med den senaste versionen av FoxTelem.

Launch Window for AMSAT’s RadFxSat-2 / Fox-1E Opens December 19th

Virgin Orbit has announced that the launch window for their
LauncherOne Launch Demo 2 mission opens on December 19th. This launch
will carry AMSAT’s RadFxSat-2 / Fox-1E to orbit.

RadFxSat-2, like RadFxSat / Fox-1B, now AMSAT-OSCAR 91, is a
partnership opportunity between Vanderbilt University and AMSAT and
will carry a similar radiation effects experiment, studying new FinFET
technology.

RadFxSat-2 is the fifth and final Fox-1 satellite built by AMSAT. The
RadFxSat-2 spacecraft bus is built on the Fox-1 series but features a
linear transponder “upgrade” to replace the standard FM transponder in
Fox-1A through D. In addition, the uplink and downlink bands are
reversed from the previous Fox satellites in a Mode V/u (J)
configuration using a 2 meter uplink and 70 cm downlink. The downlink
features a 1200 bps BPSK telemetry channel to carry the Vanderbilt
science data in addition to a 30 kHz wide transponder for amateur
radio use. Telemetry and experiment data can be decoded using FoxTelem
version 1.09 or later. FoxTelem is available at

Participation in telemetry collection by as many stations in as many
parts of the world as possible is essential as AMSAT Engineering looks
for successful startup and indications of the general health and
function of the satellite as it begins to acclimate to space. AMSAT
will send a commemorative 3D printed QSL card to the first station
capturing telemetry from RadFxSat-2.

Telemetry Downlink – 435.750 MHz
Inverting Linear Transponder Uplink – 145.860 MHz – 145.890 MHz
