The UK Smartphone CubeSat STRaND-1 will carry an Android Smartphone and plans to use data rates of 9k6 or 19k2 bps for the AX.25 packet radio downlink. A software-based speech synthesiser will be included to pay homage to the UOSAT family of satellites.

The 3U CubeSat measures 30 by 10 by 10 cm and weighs 3 kg. Unlike previous CubeSats it will feature full 3-axis control with the attitude an orbit control system comprising a nano-magnetorquer, nano-reaction wheels, GPS receiver, 8 pulse plasma thrusters and a butane thruster.

Satelliten sänder fortfarande på 145.950. fina passager på kvällarna med
många bilder

*Soyuz uppskjutningsproblem.

I veckan gick en del proviant och reservdelar till instrument förlorade då
en av dom annars så tillförlitliga raketerna fick problem med ett steg och
kunde ej nå sin bana på väg till ISS.

En andra cell i batteripacken är på väg att ge upp och nu blir det mer och
mer aktuellt med FOX satelliten som ska ersätta den populära FM satelliten.
Det verkar som att FOX ska delas upp i FOX-1 samt FOX-2 ( FOX-1 ska snabbt
ersätta AO-51.)

En rolig utmaning framåt hösten att höra ekona från asteroiden när den drar
förbi jorden.

The 400 meter diameter near-Earth asteroid 2005 YU55 will be making
a 0.85 lunar distance flyby of Earth on November 8. Michael Busch at
the UCLA Department of Earth and Space Sciences notes this may an
opportunity for amateur satellite operators to observe the fly-by.

UCLA will be conducting an extensive campaign of radar observations
with the Arecibo Observatory, the Deep Space Network Goldstone facil-
ity, and the Green Bank Telescope and the Very Long Baseline Array.

Because YU55 will be so close to Earth, its radar echo will be
detectable with even small antennas (~1 m^2). YU55’s echo will be
a slowly drifting signal with a bandwidth of ~1 Hz within a few kHz
of 2380 MHz or 8560 MHz.

This will present amateur radio operators an opportunity to receive
the radar reflections off of the asteroid because of the big dish,
big signals originating from Arecibo and Goldstone.

On November 8, 2011, 19:15 – 19:30 UTC, Arecibo will be transmitting
a continuous wave tuned to put the asteroid’s echo at a constant
2380.000000 MHz at the Green Bank Telescope. Observers elsewhere on
Earth will see the echo within 2 kHz of 2380 MHz, Doppler-shifted by
the Earth’s rotation. It will be slowly drifting in frequency and
have a bandwidth of ~0.6 Hz.

On November 9, 2011, 01:30 – 02:00 UTC, the Goldstone Deep Space Net-
work facility will be be transmitting a continuous wave tuned to put
the asteroid’s echo a constant 8560.000000 MHz at a second antenna at
the Goldstone site. Other observers may see the echo shifted by as
much as 6 kHz, and it will have a bandwidth of ~2 Hz.

*AO-51 uppdatering.

AO-51 is currently transmitting on 435.150 FM (LHCP) and using a 145.880 FM
uplink. We expect the keep this configuration “until futher notice.” The
power level is just under 1 watt (about 980 mW). The last restart of the
satellite was something like 18 days ago!! This stretch of uninterrupted
service has been great, and really just “good luck.”

Because of the failure of one cell of the six-cell battery, the bird remains
in “limp mode.” By that I mean we are limited to simple commanding and
configurations, because a software upload/execution has proven impossible
due to the lower voltages resulting from the one dead cell. At least we can
set power levels manually, change uplinks/downlinks, etc. But there is no
telemetry collection/storage, no BBS, etc.

There is a second cell in the battery that looks “sick.” We have no idea if
it will be the next cell to go (probable though), nor what the result will
be (if we lose another cell, “limp mode” probably will no longer be an
option, and the mission might be considered over.). It might last a few
days, a few months, or who knows…a few years? (doubtful).

The current scenario of AO-51 is one reason we need to keep moving AMSAT and
satellite development/building/launching moving forward!! We have learned a
lot already with ARISSat-1, and FOX looks promising. AMSAT needs the support
of its users now more than ever…

A little speculation–recently we have been looked upon kindly by the
“battery shorting gods.” It looks like AO-51’s dead cell has failed
closed/shorted–which is good for this bird; and it looks like maybe
ARISSat-1’s battery might be failing/have failed in an “open” fashion–which
is good for this bird!.
