AMSAT-SM Summary of year 2024

In 2024, we carried out two talks remotely – at the DL4 meeting in Mora and for the Gardermo group LA2G (Norway). We also had a few more requests that we unfortunately had to turn down as it didn’t fit in terms of dates.

In 2025, we are scheduled to give a talk at SSA’s (Swedish Amateur Radio society) annual meeting.

Membership status
At the end of the year, AMSAT-SM had 314 members, compared to 310 members for 2023.

X.com
Via X.com we have a continued increase in followers – right now (11 Jan 2025) 2271 ​followers compared to ​1977 ​followers at the end of 2023. This makes us one of the AMSAT groups with the most followers. X.com continues to be AMSAT-SM’s main information channel together with the website.

Bluesky – new account
At the end of 2024, we created an account on the new platform Bluesky, which is seen as an alternative to X.com. Posts from the website are automatically published to Bluesky, but otherwise no further activity takes place there. Our link on Bluesky is:

The website
We continue to write mostly in English as we have a large number of followers outside of Sweden. The cost of the website continues to be sponsored by Lars SM0TGU.

Ytterligare ett år till ända. Det är hög aktivitet i antal nya cubesats som dyker upp. En del kommer upp i rymden men ibland misslyckas antingen uppskjutning eller senare aktivering av satelliten. Det är mycket som ska falla på plats innan en signal hörs från rymden. Det är fortfarande dom gamla trotjänarna som ger mest kontakter, AO-7  RS-44 mm. 

Den geostationära transpondern QO-100 är alltid igång, och det kan dyka upp rätt mycket intressanta stationer över den.

Trafiken från rymdstationen ISS genererar mycket information både runt skolkontakter samt annan aktivitet. Repeatern som är placerad ombord är väldigt populär.

Amsatnätet på 3740 kHz söndagar klockan 10.00 rullar på som vanligt. Dom stabila deltagarna är SM4EFW samt SM4JLX. Vi har även några inhoppare som dyker upp lite till och från (alla är välkomna).

I slutet av 2024 skapade vi konto på nya plattformen Bluesky som ses som ett alternativ till X.com. Inlägg från hemsidan automatpubliceras till Bluesky men i övrigt sker ingen ytterligare aktivitet där. Vår länk på Bluesky är

Vi fortsätter att skriva det mesta på engelska då vi har ett stort antal följare utanför Sverige. Kostnaden för hemsidan fortsätter att sponsras av Lars SM0TGU.

UMKA 1 RS-40S sending SSTV for SO50 anniversary

For the @1C_SO50 22nd anniversary of the launch of the Saudi Sat SO50 the satellite UMKA-1 RS-40S is sending SSTV on 437.650 MHz FM.

The SSTV format is Robot 36. I have used the following to receive:

  • Airspy Mini
  • SDR-Console V3
  • RX-SSTV by ON6MU

Taiwan PARUS-T1A 3U – launch failed

AMSAT Presentation for Gardermogruppa LA2G

11:th December I had the honor to make an AMSAT presentation for the Gardermogruppa (LA2G) north of Oslo, Norway. The presentation was held remote with Teams.

The subjects was:

  • Short history of AMSAT and amateur radio satellites
  • Different types of satellites
  • Satellite orbits
  • Equipment – radio and antennas
  • How to track and know the status of current satellites
  • QSO tips and tricks
  • Telemetry and the SatNOGS network

Discovery Dish – S-Band Feed

KrakenRF has made an update about a new S-Band feed for the Discovery Dish system. It can receive S-band satellites between 2.2 – 2.3 GHz so it seams not to cover the amateur band at 2.4 GHz.

The satellite frequency coordination committee of the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU) on November 15 completed approval of frequency requests from the Chinese Amateur Satellite Group (CAMSAT) for a new amateur satellite to be launched next year.

CAS-11, a 6U CubeSat will include:

  • HF/UHF – H/U Mode Linear Transponder, with a bandwidth of 15kHz downlink centered at 435.505 MHz, EIRP 24 dBm
    Uplink 21.320 MHz +/- 7.5 kHz.
  • VHF/UHF – V/U Mode Linear Transponder, with a bandwidth of 30kHz downlink centered at 435.540 MHz, EIRP 24 dBm.
    Uplink 145.860 MHz +/- 15 kHz.
  • VHF/UHF – V/U Mode FM Transponder, downlink at 435.600 MHz, EIRP 24 dBm
    Uplink at 145.925 MHz
  • VHF/UHF – V/U Mode digital store-and-forward Transponder, downlink at 435.700 MHz, EIRP 24 dBm
    Uplink at 145.895 MHz
  • UHF – CW Telemetry Beacon and
  • UHF telemetry beacon using AX.25 4.8k/9.6kbps GMSK at 435.570 MHz, EIRP 23 dBm.

The above transponders and beacon will work 24/7 when the satellite power supply is sufficient. Amateur radio enthusiasts around the world can use it for two-way radio relay communication, data storage and forwarding communication, and receive satellite CW beacons.

The CAS-11 satellite will also be equipped with a 2.4 GHz multi-mode amateur radio satellite beacon transmitter, which is designed and built by university students, high school students and primary school students from Beijing Donggaodi Science and Technology Museum and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications under the guidance of CAMSAT. This is an unprecedented satellite project in China. It has brought opportunities for learning and practicing amateur radio and amateur satellites to students of all grades from elementary school to university, and promoted the application of amateur radio in space. This 2.4 GHz experimental beacon transmitter can switch to transmit five different modes of radio signals, and it will work continuously when the satellite is fully powered.

This project aims to cultivate students’ knowledge, skills and interests in amateur radio satellites. All transmission modes operate at 2.4 GHz, and the working modes are converted by the on-board computer program and ground remote control commands. It can work in the following modes: CW Telemetry Beacon, FT8 Telemetry Beacon, PPM Telemetry Beacon, or USB/SSTV Robot36, PD120 1. This beacon will transmit at 2405.500 MHz, EIRP 27 dBm.

CAS-11 carries three cameras, and the photos it takes are stored in the flash memory on the satellite. The builders have designed a simple remote control system based on DTMF commands. Amateur radio enthusiasts around the world can send DTMF commands to download the photo catalog and all photos taken by all cameras.

Anticipating a launch in September, 2025 into a 536 km polar orbit from Haiyang Sea Launch Platform, Shandong, China.
