70 CM EME från Svalbard

Hello all,

The EISCAT Svalbard Radar October operations schedule is now out on the Web – and the 32-meter antenna has been assigned to the JW/SM2BYA operation from 1800 UT, October 17 to 2400 UT, October 19 ! WE ARE REALLY GOING TO GET ON !!!

Status:

TX chain has been tested at 500+ watts output and is ready to go,Some minor work remains TBD on the RX chain, but could be used as it stands,

One DB6NT spare preamp was delivered a few days ago,
Antenna relay, sequencer, interlocks and control logic all tested and ready.

The K2RIW PA, the HV PSU and the 28/432 transverter are all built in 19 rack panel format. They will be installed in a 19 inch equipment rack in the feed cabin, only three meters from the waveguide port – so cable losses should really
be negligible.

Polarisation:

I have now double-checked the specs on the 32-meter feed system. It is set up to transmit RHC and receive LHC at 470-530 MHz.

We are going to access the feed through the RX port => we will be transmitting LHC and also receiving LHC (not RHC as said earlier). The polarisation is not likely to be more than approximately circular, as the polariser is tuned for 500 MHz, but at least the handedness should remain the same at 432.

Consequences: We are not expecting ear(th)-shattering own echoes,Stations set up for plane polarisation will lose 3 db both ways but Faraday rotation will not be an issue,

IMPORTANT: Stations able to TX/RX circular should configure their antennas for RHC and use that both for RX and TX to match our fixed LHC setting.

More info to follow later. Questions please to sm2bya@telia.com Like to see a picture of the antenna? Go to www.eiscat.com/esr Please spread the word to your terrestrial and AO-40 friends !

Vusat status 25 aug

Tv mail har kommit frn AMSAT-India angende Vusat:

Hi all,
With the successful testing of Indian and Dutch transponders, things are in good shape. Final integration of the satellite started. Have a look at the updated website http://www.amsatindia.org Likely launch during October 2003. Look for great signals from vusat.

Hi All,
With great pleasure,I wish to inform Amsat-India C0-0rninator OM.Air Cmde V.Subramanian (SUBBI VU2UV) and all others that on Thursday,21.8.2003 @ 16.00 Hrs IST the flight model of the Indian Transponder was sucessfully tested on Air by the Amsat-Technical Committee and Upagrah Amateur Radio Club VU2URC(ISRO Club Station). Congrats to VU2POP, as he was the first person to get through the
transponder. The down-link signal level reported by VU2POP was satisfactory.Sucessful two way link was established on FM,CW and Sidebands. The beacon signal level reported by POP was also satisfactory.
My sincere thanks to all other Bangalore Hams who stood by on the frequency during the testing. After few more planned tests, the transponder will be switched on again in the comming days. The exact timings will be intimated in advance.

Signaler från Mars

Med tanke p kommande Mars sond som Amsat DL hller p att frdigstlla s kan det hr vara av intresse.

During the period August 26-29 2003, NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)in cooperation with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) will be conducting a test of the Mars Relay transmitter aboard the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS)
spacecraft currently in orbit around Mars.

The test involves the spacecraft transmitting a 1 watt 437.1 MHz CW carrier for reception by the 46 meter dish at SRI.

Amateurs with 70cm EME class stations using DSP techniques may be able to detect this signal also. Andrew Bachler, N9AB, was able to detect a similar transmitter aboard Mars Odyssey while it was on its way to Mars in June of 2001.

This test will be somewhat more challenging as MGS
will be 3 times further away.

Dr. John Callas of JPL explains some of the difficulties involved: MGS will be entering and exiting occultati(blockage by Mars with respect to Earth)with each 118-minute orbit.

Furthermore, its UHF antenna (with about 0 dBi of gain, EIRP~30 dBm) will only be viewable from Earth for a few minutes (5 to 15 minutes) just before ingress and just after egress as it orbits.

Full details of the test timeline are available at
http://members.verizon.net/~km1p/ .
