Senaste nytt på satellit fronten

Nu hnder det lite igen!

AO40 gr otroligt bra med massa DX.

UO22 r igng

UO14 krnglar lite fortfarande

During the period August 26-29 2003, NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL)in cooperation with the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) will be conducting a test of the Mars Relay transmitter aboard the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS)
spacecraft currently in orbit around Mars.

The test involves the spacecraft transmitting a 1 watt 437.1 MHz CW carrier for reception by the 46 meter dish at SRI.

Amateurs with 70cm EME class stations using DSP techniques may be able to detect this signal also. Andrew Bachler, N9AB, was able to detect a similar transmitter aboard Mars Odyssey while it was on its way to Mars in June of 2001.

This test will be somewhat more challenging as MGS
will be 3 times further away.

Dr. John Callas of JPL explains some of the difficulties involved: MGS will be entering and exiting occultati(blockage by Mars with respect to Earth)with each 118-minute orbit.

Furthermore, its UHF antenna (with about 0 dBi of gain, EIRP~30 dBm) will only be viewable from Earth for a few minutes (5 to 15 minutes) just before ingress and just after egress as it orbits.

Full details of the test timeline are available at
http://members.verizon.net/~km1p/ .

SO50

Good news – the JW/SM2BYA 432 MHz EME operation is going to go ahead:

About a month ago we filed a scheduling request for the EISCAT Svalbard Radar 32-meter antenna for the weekend October 18-19, 2003, ie the first ARRL EME contest weekend.

It now appears there is about a 95 % likelihood for us to get the full contiguous 48-hour time slot from Oct. 18 00 UT to Oct. 19 24 UT ! This is much better than we ever dared hope for…

This operation will be predominantly CW and some SSB. Sorry, no JT44 and no skeds. Since Oct. 18/19 is one of the busiest contest weekends of the year,we have decided to pick a transmitting frequency and a listening band high
up in the CW segment, to minimise the risk of mutual interference between our operation and the regular contest traffic. The plan is for JW/SM2BYA to use 432.073 MHz for transmitting and .075 – .080 for receiving.

No SSB frequencies have been selected yet. To comply with the Region I band-plan, any SSB operation should be above 432.150. We are aware of the problems that may result because of the non-alignment of the band-plans in Regions II and III and are still thinking about how to handle the issue.

Due to the high latitude (78 N) the moon will be continuously above the horizon for the whole 48-hour contest period, so everybody should have a fair chance at
a contact.

The ESR antenna has about 41 dBi gain at 432, so two long yagis and 50 watts should be enough for a CW QSO with JW/SM2BYA. Please spread the word to terrestrial 432 operators !

UO14

I worked 5 new entities on AO40 during the month of July, bringing my total entities worked up to 128:

5T6M Mauritania DXpedition
YL2LW Latvia
7P8NK Lesotho DXpedition
CT3/CT1EAT Madeira DXpedition
3DA0WC Swaziland DXpedition

There was lots more interesting DX on AO40 this month:

GD6LVP/P (Isle of Man) during the first weekend in July
KH2 (Guam) by a Japanese ham A22BP (Lesotho) Nori operated portable to have windows with N. America 8J1RF (Antarctica) operated one pass for the eastern U.S.
SV5BHR (Rhodes, Dodecanese Islands) very active
EX8MLT (Kyrgyzstan)
VU2MKP (India)
9Y4AT (Trinidad and Tobago) I m still looking for him!
HL2JFN (South Korea)
5N0EVR (Nigeria) I m still looking for him!

Shawn N1HOQ summarized it pretty well when he reported a DX feast on AO40 the morning he worked 7 new countries.

During the month of August we can look forward to TZ (Mali) on AO40 courtesy of Doug N6TQS. In late September there is a good chance that HC8 (Galapagos Islands) will be onAO40.

They way things are going I imagine some other
rare ones will pop up on AO40 during the next two months. Then in October will be the Christmas Island and Cocos-Keeling Island expeditions just as
AO40 begins the bad squint season.
